Pushchair, Pram & Carseat Buying Guide

If you're thinking about what type of pram or pushchair to buy, keep in mind three important considerations: your needs, your baby's needs and your general lifestyle. Find out more in our guide, and

look at our pushchair range here.

1. Choosing the Right Stroller for You and Baby.

The right stroller can make your life with baby so much easier! Conversely, a stroller that is flimsy, breaks or doesn't fit your needs can create hassles that you don't need. Take some time before you buy a stroller to decide how and where you'll use your stroller, and you'll be much happier with your purchase. Some families decide to buy more than one stroller to meet different needs.

2. Choosing the Right Car Seat for Your Baby.

The first step in keeping your baby safe on the road is choosing a car seat that works for your baby's age and weight, and that fits your vehicle. Since your baby will need to be in a car seat from birth to about age 12, you should be prepared to buy more than one car seat.

3. Infant-Only Car Seats.

For newborns, a rear-facing, infant-only car seat is a good choice. These car seats also double as convenient baby carriers outside of the vehicle.

4. Choosing the Right Baby Carrier.

Baby carriers are incredibly handy for busy new parents. Carriers let you keep baby close while getting other chores done, and save your weary arms when you're out and about with baby. Choosing a baby carrier can be hard, though, given the wide variety of baby carrier styles available.

Classic front-pack baby carriers are easy to use, adjust easily for either parent's height and size, and can be found in most stores. Baby can face forward or towards the parent. Men often prefer the simple look of the front-pack over other baby carriers. Most front-packs can only be used one way, and some are too bulky to fit easily in a diaper bag. The weight limit is usually 20-25 pounds. Some new front-packs can be converted for use as a backpack baby carrier.

5. You and your lifestyle.

If you use public transport regularly, or have steps leading to your home, a lightweight and compact folding pram or pushchair would be best.

If you use a car, check the size of your car boot and compare it with the folded dimensions of the pram or pushchair you are thinking about buying. Do remember that, even if you have a car, you'll still need to transport your baby around town in a pram or pushchair on foot. Consider a multi-function travel system that's a baby car seat and pushchair in one.

If space is at a premium at home, it's probably best to opt for a pram or pushchair that allows the seat unit to fold.

If you walk a lot, choose a sturdy model with lockable wheels. Swivel wheels make a pushchair easy to manoeuvre, while fixed wheels make handling easier over rough surfaces. Some pushchairs offer both a fixed and swivel wheel option. However you travel, make sure you choose the correct handle height for both you and your partner - some models have adjustable handle heights.

Most important is choosing the right pushchair for you and baby comfy.

After the car seat ( as they won’t let you out of hospital without one! ),

buying a pram or pushchair is the second most important item you’ll need to purchase for your baby and could also be the most expensive!

When looking at the vast array of models available, there are several considerations for you in terms of budget and circumstances:

1. Will you be using a car or public transport most of the time?

2. How big is your car boot or hatch?

3. Do you live in a house or flat where you have to climb stairs with the pram or pushchair?

4. Do you want rear facing ( where baby faces you ) or forward facing? ( Most mums like to have their baby facing them for the first 3-6 months. After that, opinion is definitely divided on what’s best and I think you have to decide what works for you and your child. )

5. Are you looking for something you can fold with one hand?

6. Your baby's needs.

Newborn babies need to lie back, so you'll need a pram, a pushchair/carrycot combination, or a pushchair with a lie-back facility. Some models have fully reversible seat units so your baby can face you.

Consider also where your newborn baby will sleep: in a Moses basket, crib, cot or carrycot. This will also help you decide on what type of pram or carrycot to buy.

16. Safety.

By law, all pushchairs sold in the UK must comply with British standards. Some travel systems may include a car seat that complies with European standards. And you'll find more information on travel systems in our guide to car seats and car safety.

To ensure your child's safety, remember these simple points:

Do.

Always read the instructions carefully and familiarise yourself with all the moving parts before you use your pushchair for the first time.

Show anyone who's going to use your pushchair, and who may be unfamiliar with it, how to open and close it, and how to operate the brakes and locking mechanism.

Use the brakes every time you stop - even on flat surfaces.

Always secure your child in the pushchair with the five-point harness.

Always check that locking devices are secure when you open the pushchair. Remember to release all locks before folding it.

Please refer to the instruction booklet and contact the manufacturer for mor help.

Don't.

Don't leave your child unattended.

Don't adjust the seat position while your child is in the pushchair.

Don't carry more than one child in your pushchair unless it's designed for that.

Don't hang shopping or other heavy items on the handles, as it could tip over the pushchair or pram.

Don't use PVC rain covers indoors or in strong sunlight.
